Lot 2921
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.00 g, 6 h), Antiochia, July 326. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. CONSTAN/TINVS / CAESAR / SMANTΓ in four lines; above, star; below, pellet. RIC 59. Very rare. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Vecchi 5, 5 March 1997, 923.

The officinae striking for Constantine Caesar were A, B, Γ, Δ, Є, and H, although not all at the same time. Of these, officina Γ struck only for a short time and was unknown to Bruun (and therefore absent in RIC VII). This is one of the finest of only eight examples presently known from officina Γ. This makes the type the third rarest of the dynastic bronzes from Antioch (after RIC 52 from officina B and RIC 57 from officina Δ).
